Nanomaterials research in Frontier Research Program : What did “ Exotic Nano - Materials ” encompass ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
At the beginning of the second phase (Phase II) of the Frontier Materials Research Program in 1991, former Bioelectronic Materials activities were complemented by the Advanced Materials program and merged into the Laboratory for Exotic Nano-Materials. Since the initiation of Exotic Nano-Materials research, we have been committed to nanoscopic science and engineering, and unconventional combinations of organic and non-organic materials. The desired exotic characteristics meant that they had to show novel, and again unconventional and almost certainly unexpected properties. This could be achieved by various novel strategies; nanofabrication, nanocharacterization, and nanomodification.

ONE Nano: NIEHS’s Strategic Initiative on the Health and Safety Effects of Engineered Nanomaterials
BACKGROUND The past decade has seen tremendous expansion in the production and application of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). The unique properties that make ENMs useful in the marketplace also make their interactions with biological systems difficult to anticipate and critically important to explore. Currently, little is known about the health effects of human exposure to these materials. O...

متن کاملNanomaterials for Electrochemical Energy Storage: the Good and the Bad.
A critical view on the outcome of research in nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage devices (batteries and supercapacitors) is provided through selected examples. The nano- approach traces back to the early battery research and its benefits realized even before the nano- term was coined. It has enabled important progresses which have translated, for instance, in the possibility of us...
متن کاملA Review of Recent Advances towards the Development of (Quantitative) Structure-Activity Relationships for Metallic Nanomaterials
Gathering required information in a fast and inexpensive way is essential for assessing the risks of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). The extension of conventional (quantitative) structure-activity relationships ((Q)SARs) approach to nanotoxicology, i.e., nano-(Q)SARs, is a possible solution. The preliminary attempts of correlating ENMs' characteristics to the biological effects elicited by ENM...
متن کامل"Nano": the new nemesis of cancer.
Materials at nano dimensions exhibit totally different properties compared to their bulk and atomic states. This feature has been harnessed by scientists from various disciplines, to develop functional nanomaterials for cancer diagnosis and therapeutics. The success stories range from delivering chemotherapeutic molecules in nano-sized formulations to functional nanomaterials, which deliver the...
